Maki at Ongpin Mañosa

I was invited by my good friend to taste one of his favorite Chinese dish in Binondo.  At first, I told him that we can have it inside the mall but he insisted that the “best way to enjoy Chinese food is in Chinatown”.  So, I gave-in to his suggestion and we went to this restaurant that has been an institution. He told me that as early as 1970s, he has frequented the place and it never failed his expectation and satisfaction.

We ordered Maki. This is a stick pork soup. Although, I use to have maki at other restaurants, the Maki of Manosa was very much different when it comes to taste.  It was a superb dish that they have created. It was no doubt that it is one of the best maki that I tasted.

But before we went there, we ordered some toasted siopao from a shop near Mañosa to complement the maki.  What made it more delicious is to eat siopao, maki, pancit guisado and jasmine tea.

It was a very delicious food experience and a wonderful way to have a sumptuous meal along Ongpin, Binondo. Toasted siopao and maki of Mañosa is a perfect food combination. I interviewed one their waitress and she told me that Manosa has been in Ongpin for the last 75 years.

No wonder that they have perfected what a real maki should be.  It nearing Divisioria time again and I can’t wait to go back and try some more good food at Ongpin Mañosa.

Toasted Siopao

Toasted Siopao at Naga City, Camarines Sur

Steamed siopao can be found every where. There is also fried siopao in Binondo area.  In Naga City, there is Toasted Siopao.  I was first introduced to this way back 1990s.  I remember then, we use to partner it with lomi.  There are also restaurants that serve this toasted siopao and are located in the downtown area. They are know restaurants and are known from this, but there is this bakery that served it very good.  It is the 3N Bakery Siopao Center.  Their toasted siopao taste is a knock-out!!!  As a matter of fact, if you go to their bakery, you will notice a lot of people are lining up to place their order.  It is affordable and yet very delicious.  It can even last for 3 days with no refrigeration.

The Siopao Center

Where to find

3N Bakery Sipao Center is located at Concepcion Grande near Sams Motors and their second outlet at Triangulo, CBD Area near the newly built SM Naga.  I Naga, this is a must try. No matter where you buy this toasted siopao in Naga, it is worth a try.  Actually, when I went back home to Manila, I bought some as my pasalubong for my family.  I tired re heating it and it does taste good the same taste as it was taken fresh from the oven.  These small foods are those that complete my day and something that I always look forward to, to have again and again.

Siopao – Globake

As a Filipino, there will always come a time that you will crave for Siopao.  Thanks for the Chinoys who introduce these steam buns that it became a part of our culinary culture.  I believe that there are lots of delicious Siopaos made through out the archipelago. But there is this one distinct shop that makes it unique from the rest.  The sauce is already inside the steamed buns.  The meat is tender and soft. Once you eat it, you will surely crave for more.  Where can you find this siopao?  This is the siopao made by Globake.  When I go there, I always buy frozen siopao which I can bring home and store in my freezer and of course, the freshly steam in their shop that I can immediately gratify myself. Rapsa talaga!!!

Where to find

Those who are living near Barangay Kapitolyo at Pasig are very much familiar with Globake.  They are located along United st. and is very near Pioneer st. Kapitolyo, Pasig city.  They are at the back of Pioneer Center and near the entrance of barangay Kapitolyo.  They also have a shop at EDSA Central. You may also find other baked products that you may buy but for me, the Siopao is the one that magnetize me to this shop.  You may also contact them at 02-632-1881. When you go to Pasig from Shaw boulevard, don’t forget to pass by GLOBAKE to have a taste of there wonderful siopao.  Kung Hei Fat Choi!!! Welcome, year of the OX. Oks tayo dito!!
