Ted’s Oldtimer La Paz Batchoy

Super Special Batchoy

It is a must to have La Paz Batchoy when you are in Iloilo most specially when you are in the place where it was born, at La Paz. La Paz Batchoy is common at the place and there is a well known institution that has been serving this for a generation. That is Teds Oldtimer La Paz Batchoy. I remember then, during my first job around mid 90’s, my friends who were assigned at Iloilo would always talk about the tasty La Paz Batchoy of Teds Oldtimer. When I got the change to go to the place, I did not let this opportunity passed.

Inside Ted's Oldtimer

I ordered for their Super Special La Paz Batchoy. It was so special that the soup itself really tasted great.  I finished the soup and I had a refill for free. That is common at all Ted’s branches.  La Paz Batchoy has a different taste from other noodle soup. It has a taste of sweetness that I cannot describe.

It was delicious and very much inviting to sip the soup again and again.  The toppings were pork strips and chicharon (popped pork skin) with fresh egg.  You may also opt for different noodles like misua if that is your preference.  For me, I still prefer the original miki noodles and I partnered it with puto (rice cake).

TED’s Oldtimer La Paz Batchoy

Ted’s Old Timer La Paz Batchoy can be found not only around every corner of Iloilo city, but to its neighboring town as well. Ted has been in the batchoy business for a long time and have been recognize as one of Iloilo’s institution when it comes to culinary culture. For this entry, I went to their Robinson’s Place Brach in the City. They have a very accommodating staff and a clean “fastfood” style of resto. This is something you should not miss when you go to Iloilo or with in the province of Panay. Kanamit gid!!!

Lab’s Batchoy

You will be amaze that there are migrants from Panay Island and the far North of the Philippines from Ilocos that settled in South Cotabato, Mindanao. They speak their native dialect to where they originated as if they did not migrated at all.

Although Batchoy originated from La Paz Iloilo, the migrants of Panay brought this fantastic soup dish to their new place in South Cotabato.  They have created this similar to the Batchoyan in Iloilo.

I tasted this wonderful dish at Lab’s Oldtimer La Paz Batchoy in General Santos City.  It was again a self gratifying experience to taste this dish in an unexpected land of tuna and seafoods.  Of course, batchoy is not complete without the puto (rice cake).

Where to Find

Lab’s Oldtimer La Paz Batchoy can be located along Roxas East Ave., General Santos city. They also have braches at South Osmena st. and other location in the city. When in General Santos and you are craving for this sumptuous meal, drop by Lab’s and you will be truly in love with the famous La Paz Batchoy.

Deco’s La Paz Batchoy

Deco's La Paz Batchoy

Just a brief background, batchoy is a soup noodle dish that has plenty of viands.  It has pork internal organs, chicharon (pork cracklings), shrimp, chicken breast, pork loin, onion leeks, broth from chicken, shrimp and beef, and lastly, it has a rounded noodles.  There are also instant cup noodles but the best Batchoy for me is the one that came from its original place, La Paz, Iloilo.

When I arrived in Iloilo, my Ilonggo friend Nonong Bamba invited to have this famous La Paz Batchoy.  Nonong brought us to a restaurant that was established selling Batchoy for a long period of time.  That is Deco’s La Paz Batchoy.  Decos originated in La Paz Iloilo in the year 1938. They had their 70th anniversary last year (1938 to 2008).  For me, it is one of the best batchoy that I tasted.

They also have a very good side dishes: Pandesal ni Paa ( Paa was a famous Chinese baker at Iloilo), puto (rice cake), pre-war pandesal (small bread).

Deco’s La Paz Batchoy is located at Robinson’s Place De Leon st., Iloilo city.  They also have a branch in La Paz.  In Robinsons, they have a very nice restaurant and service was superb.  Their staffs were polite and when I talked to them, they were very considerate in accommodating my short interview.  Iloilo is famous to its culinary treasure and one of its pride is this La Paz Batchoy.  Eating this famous dish will entice you to its spell because aside from its taste, it carries with it a part of the Iloilo’s culinary history. Namit gid!!!
