Gyudon is a Japanese beef bowl with onions simmered in fish stock, soy, rice wine, leeks and topped with raw egg. I was first introduce with this during my days in gradeschool where I remember, falling in line in our school canteen to have a Japanese food. It was this (Gyudon) aside from Katsudon were the bestsellers and I can still remember it well, it was served at 5pesos per beef bowl. Those were the days when your 10 peso bill was more than enough to survive. Hehe.

When it was about time for me to let my kids taste this, I brought them to Rai Rai Ken. They have created it well more than I expected. It was the tasted and harmony of flavor that this restaurant is always consistent even if you transfer from one branch to the other. About the sauce, it was very delicious. It is the one that gave the full flavor and tastiness of the beef bowl.

For Rai Rai Ken, it does.

Everytime we were beside the beach, we were accustomed to eat seafoods, rice and a fresh fruit juice but sometimes, your normal craving for city food must also be satisfied.

There restaurant is open as early as 6:00am and closes early morning. Yet, you can order pizza anytime of the day. Their pizza in not ordinary pizza, it was topped with delicious pepperoni slices and full of mozzarella cheese. The crust was very delicious and the crunch and softness is there. This is only possible for if the crust is hand rolled and tossed.

Ramen is one of my favorite Japanese food aside from sushi and when that craving comes to me, Rairai Ken always pops to my mind. They have very delicious Japanese dishes but my all time favorite is their seafood ramen. It is a true sea food indulgence that will satisfy you from the first time you sip the soup up to the last noodle that you will slurp.

My family and I waited for an order of lumpia for our visitors at MetroCentre Hotel, Bohol. We were curious because we were referred to the place as one of those who makes a very delicious lumpiang hubad. While waiting, we ordered some quesadillas. To our surprise, it was so deliciously topped with ground beef and melted mozzarella cheese. This heavenly appetizer was also very delicious aside from the lumpia that I mentioned. It is one of the best quesadillas that I tasted. Most of which are stuffed with cheese, cilantro and beef. But for this one, aside from the stuff inside the pita, they generously spread the toppings on top creating a pizza like quesadillas.
Where to Find
The Quesadillas of Bohol Metrocentre Hotel and Convention is along C.P. Garcia uptown Tagbilaran City. Once you entered the hotel, they have a restaurant just beside the lobby waiting for hungry guests just like us. It was worth the wait for the lumpia because we discovered another fantastic appetizer that Metrocentre Hotel has and indeed it was truly cheesy.

After eating pure meat, it is time to go veggies. As a Filipino, Chopsuey is always a familiar vegetable dish that can be found at every Filipino restaurant. This is a mixed vegetable dish. Mostly, it is a combination of onions, cabbage, bell pepper, broccoli, mushrooms, water chestnut, cauliflower, shrimp and some pork. It is then stir-fried and best served half cooked. This technique will give you the crisp in every bite.
Where to find
You may find Chopsuey eveywhere in the county but for this, I would like to recommend the chopsuey of Jj’s Seafood Village. If you are coming from Cebu and you landed at Tagbilaran Port, it is the first street to your right. It will take you at least 500 meters from the street corner to reach the panaflex of Jj’s Seafood Food Village. When in Tagbilaran City, don’t forget to drop by Jj’s Seafood Village. There is also a very good chopsuey that I tasted at Joe Kuan. But I have to look for this since the last time I went there was a long time ago and the branch was at Buendia cor. Taft ave. I don’t know it it still exist. Nevertheless, I will still look for a branch of Joe Kuan. If every you know of a branch, I will be very happy to be informed. Yes my fellow foodies, this delicious healthy vegetable dish will balance your meat intake. Rapsa talaga ang Chopsuey all the time!!!
Sobrang Anghang, Sobrang Sarap!!! This is the hinalang na manok that was serve to me during my stay in Bohol. It is chicken cooked in coconut milk with plenty of chili (bird’s eye pepper). For this culinary experience, native chicken was used that made it more delicious. This is one of the dish that I can say, the sauce goes very good with hot steamed rice. The blend of coconut milk and spiciness makes the sauce a viand in itself. “Sarsa pa lang, ulam na”. It was so delectable that I was able to eat plenty of rice.
Hinalang in the Visayas, means “spicy”. The technique in cooking is similar to chicken curry except that there is no curry powder and this is full of chilis. Since this was new to me, I had a very sumptuous meal without tinking of diet at least for a while. Hehe! By the way, It did went well with seafoods. Hinalang is truly a mouth-watering food that will surely perk you up. Thanks to my mother-in-law who prepared this dish for me. She knew that I was fun of eating spicy foods and dishes not new to me. If you want to have this, make sure you know someone from the Visayas or Minadanao who knows how to cook. I’m pretty sure they know how to prepare this super spicy food. Hang kaayo bai!!!

Merienda time is torta time in the Visayas. This is a popular merienda delicacy that you will find in every bakery in the Visayas and Mindanao. It is more or an oversized cup cake as it appears to me. You may also find this in the Metro specially those whose bakery originated from the southern Philippine island. There are many ways to enjoy this simple yet very delectable cake. You may toast it. Other put butter before toasting. I tried toasting it with butter and quick melt cheese and it is truly yummy. But to make it simple, eat it directly with your favorite soft drinks or coffee will do.
Torta in Bohol is always present during fiestas. After a sumptuous feast of fiesta food, this delicacy is shared to the visitors for them to bring as they go home. It is a Filipino spirit of giving through this popular bread named Torta.
